Caroline Forbes.
So the writers tried to create Elena in S1 as an incredibly lovable person that everyone looked up to, the kind, generous, good, beautiful girl that drew people towards her like a warm light. And I think they kinda failed dismally. And yet they've actually managed to create a character who would be believable in that role...from Caroline Forbes, possibly the girl who gets more criticism than anyone else and who has to date received a total of 3 unadulterated compliments on the show that I can remember (seriously. I counted. "You've become this person...this strong, confident person." "I don't know how anyone wouldn't fall for her, because she's pretty incredible." "I can handle myself." "You sure can." That's it. That's all. SERIOUSLY, WTF.)
I am a little bit torn because...I wonder if I would like Caroline as much as I do now if things came so easily to her as they do to Elena? The characters I usually like are the ones for whom nothing comes easy, who are the opposite of the Golden Girl/Boy, who are constantly struggling for acceptance and recognition. It's one of the things that drew me to Caro in the first place way back in Season 1. If she found life as easy as Elena does, then she wouldn't be Caroline. (Actually, "Insecure, neurotic control freak on crack" describes a LOT of my favorite fictional characters.)
I actually wouldn't have minded a few more eps seeing Caroline be just the awesome friend she can be to Tyler, so I'm happy to have them re-establish this and then go back to Forwood kissage sometime down the track.
I'm hoping Caroline has a moment sometime down the track where she realises herself just how unhealthy her relationship with Matt is, as well as the fact that it represents her denying the new supernatural reality of her life. I don't know if she has fully dealt with the fact yet that she is a vampire.
Tyler: If a werewolf bite kills a vampire, why would you risk it?
Caroline: Because you needed help.
Tyler: I could’ve killed you.
Caroline: But you didn’t.
Tyler: I don’t understand you, Caroline.
Caroline: Why is it so hard for you to let someone else help you?
Tyler: That’s not it.
*Kiss* AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
I think this is the first time we see Tyler actually pine for a girl. Yes, there was Vicki, and although Tyler had genuine feelings for her, we never saw him the way he was here with Caroline. When he said, “That’s not it,” I think he wanted to tell Caroline that “it’s not just about you helping me, I want to know if there is more to it.” He wanted to know if she also had feelings for her; that’s why when he kissed her, I squealed, he stepped back for a while to see how Caroline would react. And then he kissed her again, and I squeal again, and something we all probably didn’t expect happens: Caroline kisses back and I literally jumped off my seat.
We waited for more than month to see this kiss happen and it was worth every minute of the wait. Although I was a bit disappointed that the “Whatever you need, I’m right here” scene (the one we saw from the extended promo for 2x12) was cut off in the episode, this moment was just perfect for the Forwood shipper in me.
Caroline: Tyler.. I know, I said a lot of mean things to you before you left.. And you need to know that I’m sorry.. And that you need to come back.. Because I need you here.
What I want to happen is for Caroline to find out about Matt and her mom lying to her and to realize that as Tyler needed her, she needs him, too. He was the one to make her feel wanted and important; make her feel human again in spite of her being a vampire. After this call, Tyler will decide to go back to Mystic Falls and they’ll deal with the Matt and Sheriff Forbes issue together as everyone else’s top priority would be Klaus. As they spend time together, they’ll get to talk more about them as well, and get into details like why Caroline really risked her life to be there for Tyler, why Tyler kissed her and why Caroline kissed back, and everything else in between.
